Salalah is a port city in southern Oman, known for its role as the capital of the Dhofar region.
Positioned along the Arabian Sea, it experiences a seasonal monsoon called the khareef that significantly alters its environment.
During the khareef season, the normally arid landscape becomes green and misty, especially around sites like the Al Mughsail Beach cliffs and Wadi Darbat waterfalls. Outside these months, Salalah offers a more typical desert coastal climate with historical landmarks such as the Sultan Qaboos Mosque and the ancient frankincense trade routes nearby.
Khareef Season
The khareef monsoon runs from July to September, bringing cool temperatures and fog that turn the landscape green, unlike most of Arabia.
Frankincense Trails
Salalah was a hub on frankincense trade routes; visit the UNESCO site of Al-Baleed Archaeological Park for insight into this heritage.
Wadi Darbat
A short drive from the city, Wadi Darbat features seasonal lakes and waterfalls that swell during the monsoon, ideal for day trips.
